How to Make Fresh Juice

Eating two to three pounds of vegetables a day does not sound ideal to me, and that is why I love juicing. I started juicing a few months ago and now I do it about 5 times a week. It can help with increasing energy levels, stronger immune system, and help aid weight loss. Research shows it many even reduce the chances of a stroke, cancer, and heart diseases, which are the three leading causes of death. MAKE YOUR OWN JUICE! This is so important because the ones you buy in bottles are heated and processed, taking away the vitamins and minerals. A juicer can be on the pricey side but it is definitely worth the investment. This is the juicer I use Omega VERT Slow Juicer VSJ843QS, Square Version, Silver. I love this juicer because it is so easy to use and clean up after. I know there are a lot that take you about two hours to finish everything, this one only takes me around 15-30 minutes!

This is what I use when I make my juice: Carrots, Apples, Spinach, Broccoli, Kale, Beets. I also like to add some berries just to make it a little sweet and easier to drink.

5 Tips for Starting a Healthy Lifestyle

Everyone always wants to wait for a new year, new month, or new week to start living a healthier  lifestyle. The truth is you can start today, you can start right now. Your body goes through so much everyday, don’t you think it deserves to be taken care of? Having a healthy lifestyle is not about how you look it is how you feel. People think you have to be skinny mini in order to be healthy, no all you have to do is to give your body what it needs. Here are some tips to help you get started now!

Set Realistic Goals

If you set yourself goals that are not realistic your going to end up giving up. Start small and from there challenge yourself everyday to do more. If you have never worked out before don’t go to the gym for two hours, and do the same workout as someone who has been going for years. When you achieve your goals it makes you more motivated. I know when I accomplish something I just want to keep going. Start by drinking more water instead of juice or soda. Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole foods instead of processed junk. Begin with small goals and then start to set bigger ones.

Eat Breakfast Everyday

Breakfast is sooo important I can’t say that enough! How is your body suppose to perform and have energy if your not feeding it? I know a lot of people are not a big fan of cooking in the morning, so just make a quick smoothie. Add some greens, fruit, almond milk, and chia seeds. That is going to give you so many nutrients plus give you energy to go through your day. Breakfast is so important because you have do not eat when your sleeping of course so it breaks that fasting period. Eating a nutritious breakfast promotes weight loss by maintaining blood glucose levels and your metabolism.

Have Support

I believe that it is very important to starting a healthy journey for yourself and no one else. You need to want to be healthy to feel and look good for you, not for others. With that being said having support from friends or family can really help. I know when I go to the gym with someone I go so much harder lol, call it my competitiveness but hey it works. If you live with someone ask them if they want to go shopping for new food. Look up healthy recipes and make them together. You can schedule to go to the gym with a friend a couple times a week. This way you are both committed to going and hanging out.

Stay Positive

There is going to be days where you just do not feel like getting out of bed and want to eat junk food all day. That is okay we all get like that sometimes. But it is important to stay positive and remember why you started. If you start thinking this is not going to work mostly likely its not going to work. There is a phrase “healthy mind, healthy body.” You have to be realistic do not try to lose all this weight in a short period of time. It takes awhile to lose healthy weight and keep it off. Starving yourself is not the answer, and will actually make your body hold on to more fat. Be consistent and remember it will take awhile to get where you want, and that is okay.

Reward Yourself

When I say reward yourself I am not saying go indulge in bad food or go days without being active. Of course we will all have our off days but that should not be you rewarding yourself. Lets say you set your goals to eat no processed foods for a month, do not say well I did it so now I can eat whatever I want. No go buy yourself new workout clothes or that blender you have been wanting. Maybe you get a new bike, spa day, mani pedi, or a nice water bottle. Reward yourself with things that are going to help/want you to keep going.

The Truth About Naked Juice

I  used to love different kinds of juice drinks like Naked Juice, and then I started to learn more about nutrition. I thought well the label says it has all of these different fruits and vegetables in it, how can it possibly be bad for you? A couple of months ago I started to really look and understand the nutrition labels. When I saw that Naked Juice has over 28 grams of sugar in just one of them I was disgusted. Ever since I learned about that I refuse to buy juices I just make my own smoothies now. I know fruit has sugar in it so I wanted to really do my research about this product and see what it was that made it so unhealthy. The sugar in Naked Juice is mostly from fructose so when you drink just one juice, you are consuming more sugar in that one sitting than you should for the whole day. The worst part is that Naked Juice contains 0 grams of fiber, fiber in fruit is what regulates the digestion. Fiber is also what fills you up and since this juice contain no fiber… well you still are going to be hungry. Just like other products Naked Juice has to go through pasteurization and irradiation, these processes have small to really big effects on the nutritional value. This means that by the time this drink gets to your lips it is a processed food product. Not so healthy anymore is it? To be completely honest the only difference between Mountain Dew and the Naked Juice is the juice possibly contains fewer chemicals!! The sad thing is not even that has been completely proven… the next time you want to grab a Naked Juice, maybe you should just pick up a Mountain Dew. I mean it is all the same after all, just another sugary drink that people are trying to make money from. If you really want a healthy drink just make your own smoothies and juices. Not only is it 100 times more healthy, it will also save you some money.large

Almond Milk vs. Regular Milk

Almond milk and regular milk are both packed with a variety of minerals and nutrients.  However, they both have pros and cons that leaves people confused on which one to choose. I personally am not a huge fan of milk, but I still will drink it to get the health benefits. I use almond milk for smoothies, eggs, and sometimes I will put a little into my coffee. The question is which one is the healthier alternative. Which one has more benefits for your body? Keep reading to find out the difference between these two.

Almond Milk

Almond milk is made from ground almonds and water, and is a plant based alternative for whole milk. It is dairy, soy, and lactose free, which is great for people who are lactose and tolerant. However almond milk does not have as much nutrients as eating almonds which is a downside. Almond milk also does not provide as much protein or calcium as whole milk. Another positive thing about almond milk is that there is no cholesterol or saturated fat which keeps the heart healthy. It contains one gram of fiber to keep the digestive system in check and well. B vitamins are found in almond milk such as iron and riboflavin, which helps muscle growth and healing. Almond milk can also help high blood pressure because it is high in healthy fats like omega fatty acids.

Whole milk has double the amount of phosphorus and potassium than almond milk. Whole milk also contains about 12 grams of carbohydrates, unsweetened almond milk contains less than 1 gram. Make sure to keep in mind this is only unsweetened almond milk, sweetened can have around 16 grams. Another downside of almond milk is that it only has 1 gram of protein when whole milk has 8 grams. Both are rich in calcium, vitamin A, vitamin D, and B vitamins. Whole milk is a good source of phosphorus but almond milk is rich in vitamin E. Cow milk may be high in protein but almond milk is naturally lactose free.

So which one is better for your health? The choice is completely up to you, of course almond milk does have fewer fats but it also lacks protein. If you are looking for a plant based milk that is lactose, soy, and dairy free almond milk is for you. If you are looking for more protein and potassium than whole milk is for you.

Three Healthy Snacks That You Need to Try

You may hear people say that to lose weight or to be healthier you need to cut out snacks, and try to only eat the three necessary meals. However studies have shown that an American eats 2.2 snacks each day and gets one-quarter of total calories in snacks. Eating healthy snacks has many benefits like your nutrient intake, sustain energy levels, improves mood, and boosts energy.

Walnuts- Walnuts have a great source of nutrients and minerals that are important for your healthy. They are also an amazing source of plant based protein. Walnuts have a high level of omega-3 fatty acids in them. These acids help lower blood pressure and is very beneficial for all parts of the cardiovascular system. Antioxidants are very important for your health, because they are believed to help control how fast you age by combating free radicals. Walnuts have antioxidants that are so powerful that researchers call them remarkable! Research has also shown that walnuts can help prevent chemically induced liver damage. Something that is really interesting about walnuts is that they can help reduce the chance of you getting cancer. Walnuts can prevent the chances of getting prostate and breast cancer. There was a study with mice where they had to eat 2.4 ounces of whole walnuts for 18 weeks. Their prostate tumors had gotten significantly smaller and grew slower than the mice that consumed fat from other foods. Try eating a handful of walnuts a few times a week to help your health, and prevent your chance of cancer!

Avocados- Avocados have been shown to lower cholesterol by 22 percent. They are very rich in healthy and satisfying fats. They can reduce your chance of getting a heart disease, because one avocado has more than half the fiber and 40 percent of folate you need daily. Avocados also contain  Vitamin C that helps to strengthen blood vessels and capillaries, this can help improve immune function for diabetics. They are a good source of B Vitamin which helps you fight off diseases and infections. Avocados can also promote eye health because they have an excellent source of carotenoid lutein. This is known to help protect against age related macular degeneration and cataracts. If you want to feel full longer you should try eating avocados, they are high in fiber and low in sugar! Avocados are high in fat but the good thing is that it is monounsaturated fat, which is actually good for you. It helps lower your cholesterol you just need to make sure you eat them in moderation.

Dark Chocolate- Dark chocolate being a healthy snack? No you did not misread that, it can actually be very beneficial for your health if you eat it in moderation. Of course you do not want to be eating it all day everyday but you should incorporate into your diet for some days. It is loaded with nutrients that are good for your health. Dark chocolate is made from a seed from a coca tree that contains the best source of antioxidants in the planet. Antioxidants clean up free radicals, destructive particles that are implicated in heart disease and other ailments. Studies prove that eating this chocolate two to three times a week can lower your blood pressure. This is because it is improves your blood flow and possibly prevent the formation of blood clots. The best part is that dark  chocolate even helps your brain! It increases blood flow to the brain and your heart, which can help improve cognitive function. I am not saying to go eat a big bar of dark chocolate every day. Try eating a small chuck twice or three times a week and see if you notice any difference!

These are three very simple snacks that can have a real impact on your health. The best part is that they are all tasty and easy to use for different meals. Try putting some avocado on whole wheat toast or making a guacamole. You can mix the walnuts with some dried fruit and other nuts to make you own trail mix. Do you love these snacks and have your own recipes with them?
